CarolinaPower Supports Cancer Survivors through Charleston Dragon Boat Race

May 23, 2019 by carolinapower Leave a Comment

CarolinaPower’s Charleston office proudly supported local cancer survivors by participating in the 12th Annual Dragon Boat Charleston Festival held earlier this month at Brittlebank Park. This was the second consecutive year that CarolinaPower’s Johnny Monroe and his wife Stephanie paddled with the Shealy Shockwaves, a 20-person team sponsored by Shealy Electrical Wholesalers, a division of Border States Supply Chain Solutions.

Dragon Boat Charleston (DBC) is a non-profit organization that promotes the mental and physical wellness of cancer survivors through the sport of dragon boating. Originated in China over 2,000 years ago dragon boating is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. Twenty paddlers sit two abreast in colorful 48-foot vessels while paddling to the beat of a drummer, the heartbeat of the dragon.

DBC believes that the sport affords those diagnosed with cancer an opportunity to reclaim their sense of self, feel strong, set long term goals and push the restart button on their lives. Through DBC’s annual fundraising efforts, all cancer survivors participate in this life-changing program free of charge.

More than 40 teams entered the 2019 Dragon Boat Charleston Festival, with three boats racing at a time. Money raised by each team stays local and directly helps cancer survivors. As a team, the Shealy Shockwaves raised $1,300. CarolinaPower’s donation was equally matched by its parent company (PPC Partners) through the PPC Foundation, Inc.

Making a Difference in the Lives of Local Cancer Survivors

According to DBC, proceeds from last year’s festival paid the expenses of DBC cancer survivor paddling programs, paid for nutrition and yoga workshops, endurance paddles, an 8-week outreach session for cancer survivors, the Carolina Celebration Cup — a race just for cancer survivors hosted by DBC; and they sent three teams to international events to represent Charleston which fulfilled a bucket list item for many. In addition, they had the opportunity to paddle year-round 4-5 times per week. DBA attributed the great year to the amazing people who support the festival.

More about Dragon Boat Charleston

Dragon Boat Charleston (DBC) is nonprofit organization that serves a Club that is made up of about 150 members in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Some are cancer-survivors, some are community paddlers, some are premiere racers and some like to watch the sunset on the Ashley River. There is a boat for everyone at DBC! DBC participates in 4-5 races per year, has off-season programs like yoga and nutrition classes and numerous social and recreational gatherings throughout the year. Some call it a “floating support group,” some call it a family. Whatever it is…it’s fun! You’ve got to check it out! Visit the Dragon Boat Charleston website.
